For Immediate Release
Melbourne, Australia – Seminal, a Melbourne-based pioneer in art technology has developed the first global copyright register for art. Designed to protect, license, and sell artists' intellectual property (‘IP’), the platform is redefining how art is monetised and consumed in the digital age.
Seminal successfully raised AUD 3 million (USD 2 million) in a seed funding round led by the renowned venture capital firm Investible, earlier this year. "We are profoundly thankful to the Investible team, our incredible staff, and all those who have contributed to Seminal's journey," said CEO Ward Williams. "Their support has been instrumental in advancing our mission to empower artists and estates in the digital era."
Seminal's platform offers comprehensive copyright services for artists, including IP registration, rights sales, and IP licensing for consumer products. While also enabling passive licensing for major tech companies such as Samsung, Meta, Open AI, and rights infringement screening on platforms like Amazon, Ali Express, Ebay, and Etsy.
"We're in advanced discussions with major brands and manufacturers for consumer product licensing, large online marketplaces for infringement screening, and well-known estates for catalogue sales," Williams added, indicating Seminal’s wide-ranging appeal.
With over 100 artists globally, including renowned names like Fang Lijun, Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, Gawx and Terry Urban among others, Seminal is set for rapid expansion. "Within 5-10 years, we expect every major tech platform, marketplace and publisher to be using our software in some capacity" Williams revealed.
Seminal is delivering critical copyright infrastructure to an industry that has traditionally lagged behind other creative sectors like music, film, and literature. "The interest we've received is not just a testament to our vision, but also to the urgent need for a platform like Seminal for the arts" Williams added.
The funds raised are allocated to further develop Seminal's platform and tooling to integrate into other major tech platforms, with a global release planned ahead of Christmas.
Williams shares his enthusiasm for the future: "We're excited about the upcoming possibilities. Our commitment is to create opportunities for new artists and estates to utilise their copyright, a much-neglected asset in the art world.”
"Seminal is the most exciting prospect to the art community since galleries came along" Williams concluded. "A New York curator told us: ‘
I finally have hope for this industry, I want to be the person that puts an end to the clichè of the starving artist'."
